Red Jamsran: a Buddhist God of War

Mongolians, originally Shamanists (Nature worshippers), are now predominantly Buddhist. This handmade mask is Red Jamsran, a god of war. The word Jamsran, sometimes spelled Dshamsran, also means "brother or sister" in Mongolian.

Genghis Khan Occupies The Tech Museum

This beautiful black painted script on red is Genghis Khan's name (pronounced Chingis) written in Mongolian. I have learned so much about Mongolian culture since this exhibit opened. The decor of this ger, a traditional Mongolian dwelling often called a yert, inspired the decoration of my bedroom.





In the 12th & 13th centuries, Shamanism was the major spiritual practice of Mongolia.
